The Marina Yacht Club – Past, Present, and Future
In the early 1970s, The Howard Hughes Corporation added a clause to the Marina City Club (MCC) land lease stating that there shall always be a yacht club at the MCC. This paved the way for the creation of one of the first yacht clubs in Marina del Rey and the City Club’s own boating organization: the Marina Yacht Club (MYC).
The fortunes of the MYC have waxed and waned over the past 50+ years, but there is now a new group of enthusiasts working to bring the Yacht Club back to its past glories.
The Marina Yacht Club has a great history of events and races, including the Dr. Robert Baker Regatta, the Fourth of July Shakedown, and various races and dock parties. The Catalina Flotilla (a group of boats traveling together) is planned to resume in the future.
Starting in the early 2000s, the Club has been reorganizing and rebuilding with fresh, dedicated membership. The reincarnation of the MYC can now proudly point to back-to-back victories in the Holiday Boat Parade. There are also reciprocal privileges with a number of other yacht clubs such as the South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club, the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, and the Pacific Mariners Yacht Club.
If you own a boat, want to learn more about boating, or simply want to get more involved in the community, the Marina Yacht Club is an excellent opportunity here at the Marina City Club. And it is also a great chance to help rebuild this storied institution at a time when individuals can have a real impact on the future of the Club.
